Washington Sundar.


Born on October 5, 1999, Washington Sundar is an Indian cricket player. [sun̪d̪arʾ] is his Tamil name. He is an all-around player who bats left-handed and bowls right-arm off-spin. He represents Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket and plays for the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He made his debut for the Indian cricket team against Sri Lanka in 2017.

Early Life.
On October 5, 1999, Washington Sundar was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, into a Tamil Hindu family. His father, M. Sundar, gave him his name in honor of P.D. Washington sundar, who had supported and encouraged his father’s passion for cricket. His sister Shailaja Sundar, M.S. Shailaja, also plays cricket professionally. Sundar started playing cricket when he was four or five years old.
He received his early education at St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School before earning a degree from the Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science in Chennai.

Domestic and IPL Career.
washington Sundar made his Ranji Trophy first-class debut for Tamil Nadu on October 6, 2016. Similar to Ravichandran Ashwin, he rose from a youthful batsman to a renowned off-spinner.
In October 2017, he was selected to take Ravichandran Ashwin’s place in the Rising Pune Supergiant team for the Ranji Trophy season of 2017–18. He played his first IPL 2017 Twenty20 match for the Rising Pune Supergiant on April 22. He was named Player of the Match after taking three wickets and conceding just 16 runs in the Pune Supergiant vs. Mumbai Indians first qualifier.
In the January 2018 IPL auction, Royal Challengers Bangalore bought Sundar. Later that year, in October, he was added to the India C team for the Deodhar Trophy in 2018–19.
At the 2022 IPL auction, Sunrisers Hyderabad paid ₹8.75 crore for him. In August 2022, he played for Lancashire County Cricket Club in the Royal London One-Day Cup and County Championship. In his impressive debut, he claimed five wickets against Northamptonshire County Cricket Club.

International Career.
In November 2017, Sundar was a member of India’s Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for the series against Sri Lanka. After suffering a hamstring injury, Kedar Jadhav was also included in India’s One Day International (ODI) squad for the same series.
He took his first international wicket against Lahiru Thirimanne in his debut One-Day International (ODI) match for India against Sri Lanka on December 13, 2017. On December 24, 2017, he made his T20I debut for India against Sri Lanka at the age of 18 years and 80 days, making him the youngest player to do so.
In March of that year, washington Sundar was selected to compete in the 2018 Nidahas Trophy against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.He received praise for his economical bowling during powerplay overs, giving up fewer than six runs per over. He was selected Player of the Series and became the youngest player to take three wickets in a Twenty20 International match. He then started playing for India’s Twenty20 International team on a regular basis.
Sundar was only chosen for India’s 2020–21 tour of Australia as a net bowler. He did, however, make his Test debut in the series finale at The Gabba on January 15, 2021, despite travel limitations brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic and other bowlers’ injuries.


His first Test wicket was Steve Smith. In his maiden innings, he scored 62 runs and partnered with Shardul Thakur for a crucial 123-run stand for the seventh wicket. India’s historic victory at The Gabba was made possible by their teamwork, which kept them from crumbling in the opening inning. With this half-century, washington Sundar became the third Indian player to achieve fifty on his Test debut in Australia.
In October 2024, Sundar took his first ten wickets in Test cricket against New Zealand.
