Ben Duckett’s Consolation Pat Fails to Mend Jacob Bethell’s Heartbreak.
Ben Duckett’s pat on the back did little to lift the spirits of a despondent Jacob Bethell, who was just four runs away from his first Test century. There were audible mutterings from the traveling supporters as Bethell exited for 96, narrowly missing the chance to become England’s youngest Test century since Len Hutton and Denis Compton before World War II.

Carse has added a fresh dimension to England’s bowling attack with his accuracy and speed Smith has easily adjusted to Test cricket, playing well in both leading the bottom order and rebuilding innings.
Bethell, maybe the most gifted of them all, has added to England’s talent pool. His natural confidence, which is bolstered by his golden hair and boy band appeal, makes him appear like a good fit for this stage..

Bethell almost lost his stumps due to a mishit pull shot and a strained bicep from Tim Southee. An amazing 220-ball partnership for 187 runs came to an end when he was caught driving on the next ball, getting closer to a century with a boundary. Duckett’s comforting touch did little to lift Bethell’s spirits when he returned with his head lowered. Duckett, who was obviously irritated and hesitant to leave the field, himself fell in the 90s.
Duckett may have attributed the slowing in his typically fluid technique in the 1980s to a lack of focus. Despite his rhythmic problems, Atkinson showed that he could step up to the plate with his hat-trick earlier in the tour.

As the day drew to a close, England’s dominance became clear. Root and Stokes took the lead with audacious strokes and steadily increased England’s lead. Despite whispers of a declaration, Stokes decided to bat on, leaving the Kiwis to rumour and toil.
